Ear surgery, known as otoplasty, is usually
preformed on children between the ages of 4 and 14 requiring
correction of protruding ears.
The procedure is relatively simple and involves a small
incision on the backside of the ears. The sculpting, reshaping
and removing of excess cartilage which will improve the all over
appearance of the ears, setting protruding ears close to the head.
When the child is about to start school, he or she may
become embarrassed and withdrawn because of the perceived
difference from classmates. This is the time when most parents
consider this procedure.
A parent should frankly discuss goals and expectations
about the child looking and feeling better after surgery, keeping
in mind that the desired result is improvement, not perfection.

The operative technique will vary depending on physical
features. The aim is to create a more pronounced fold in the central portion
of the ear by remodelling the cartilage. Skin is removed from behind the ear,
part of the cartilage is folded or removed, and the ear is allowed to bend
naturally towards the side of the head.
Emotional stability is the primary factor to be considered before
any aesthetic surgery is performed. Although some children are able to cope
with the self-consciousness created by this condition, some may need extra
help before fully benefiting from this surgery.
Most patients are able to return to school or work in one week but
are advised to avoid excessive exercise for 3 weeks.
This procedure is also used for the reduction of large ears. Dr.
Moloney will discuss how he will harmonize the shape of each ear with the
other for a balanced appearance.
